George of Ioannina (Translation of Relics)

Translation of the relics of the Holy New Martyr George of Ioannina.

George, a poor groom from the village of Tzourchli in Epirus, was hanged at Ioannina in 1838 for refusing to deny Christ after a false accusation that he had once become a Muslim. His relics were found incorrupt and became a source of many miracles.

The Church commemorates their solemn translation on this day, alongside his feast on January 17.

On the New Calendar, George of Ioannina (Translation of Relics) is commemorated on October 26. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 8 of the civil calendar.
