Demetrios the Peloponnesian

Holy New Martyr Demetrios the Peloponnesian, beheaded at Tripolitsa.

Demetrios was born in the Peloponnese and as a boy, in the service of a Turkish master, was induced to accept Islam. Coming to himself, he repented bitterly and, after preparation on Mount Athos and elsewhere, returned to confess Christ openly before the judge at Tripolitsa.

He was beheaded there in 1803 and is honoured among the new martyrs of the Peloponnese.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Demetrios the Peloponnesian is commemorated on April 14. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 27 of the civil calendar.
