Thomais of Alexandria

Holy Martyr Thomais of Alexandria, who died defending her chastity.

Thomais was a young married woman of Alexandria in the fifth century, raised in piety. Her father-in-law, inflamed with passion, attempted to force her while her husband was away, and when she resisted he killed her with a sword.

She was buried with honour at a monastery near the city, and the fathers of the desert taught that those struggling with carnal temptation should seek her prayers.

On the New Calendar, Thomais of Alexandria is commemorated on April 14. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 27 of the civil calendar.
