Dionysius of Suzdal

Saint Dionysius, Archbishop of Suzdal, founder of the Caves monastery of Nizhny Novgorod.

Saint Dionysius was a monk of the Kiev Caves who founded the Ascension Caves monastery at Nizhny Novgorod and became bishop of Suzdal. He was a friend of Saint Sergius of Radonezh and Saint Alexis of Moscow and was named metropolitan of Russia, but was detained in Kiev, where he reposed in 1385.

On the New Calendar, Dionysius of Suzdal is commemorated on June 26. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 9 of the civil calendar.
