John, Bishop of Gothia

Saint John the Confessor, Bishop of the Goths in Crimea, defender of the holy icons.

Saint John was born in Crimea and became bishop of the Goths who lived there in the eighth century. He travelled to Jerusalem and Georgia, defended the veneration of icons against the iconoclast emperors, and was imprisoned by the Khazars, from whom he escaped. He reposed in Amastris around 790.

On the New Calendar, John, Bishop of Gothia is commemorated on June 26. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 9 of the civil calendar.
