Ephraim of Nea Makri

Great Martyr Ephraim the Wonderworker of Nea Makri, monk of Mount Amomon martyred by the Turks.

Ephraim was born in Trikala in the late fourteenth century and became a monk at the Monastery of the Annunciation on Mount Amomon near Nea Makri in Attica. When Turkish raiders attacked the monastery, tradition relates that he was tortured for months and finally killed, nailed to a mulberry tree, in 1426.

His relics were discovered in 1950 after a nun of the monastery was guided to the spot in prayer, and many healings have been attributed to his intercession since.

On the New Calendar, Ephraim of Nea Makri is commemorated on May 5. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 18 of the civil calendar.
