  Irene the Great Martyr

  Martyr, Ειρήνη η Μεγαλομάρτυς

  The Holy Great Martyr Irene lived in the early centuries of the Church. According to tradition she was the daughter of a pagan ruler and came to faith in Christ in her youth, receiving in baptism the name Irene, which means peace. Confessing the Lord openly, she endured many tortures with courage, and her endurance drew multitudes to belief.

• Ephraim of Nea Makri

  Martyr, Εφραίμ ο Μεγαλομάρτυς

  Ephraim was born in Trikala in the late fourteenth century and became a monk at the Monastery of the Annunciation on Mount Amomon near Nea Makri in Attica. When Turkish raiders attacked the monastery, tradition relates that he was tortured for months and finally killed, nailed to a mulberry tree, in 1426.
