Eustathios of Thessaloniki

St. Eustathios Kataphloros, Archbishop of Thessaloniki, scholar and shepherd.

St. Eustathios was a deacon and teacher of Constantinople, one of the great scholars of the twelfth century, who became Archbishop of Thessaloniki. He labored to reform the monastic life of his diocese and remained with his people through the Norman sack of the city in 1185, of which he wrote an account.

He reposed around 1195 and was glorified by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1988. He is commemorated on September 20.

On the New Calendar, Eustathios of Thessaloniki is commemorated on September 20. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 3 of the civil calendar.
