Hilarion the New Martyr of Crete

New Martyr Hilarion of Crete, monk of the Skete of St. Anne on Mount Athos.

St. Hilarion was born at Heraklion in Crete and, tradition relates, in youth was led to deny the faith in Constantinople. Repenting, he went to Mount Athos, was tonsured at the Skete of St. Anne, and prepared himself for martyrdom under the guidance of the elders.

Returning to Constantinople, he confessed Christ before the Turkish authorities and was beheaded in 1804. He is commemorated on September 20.

On the New Calendar, Hilarion the New Martyr of Crete is commemorated on September 20. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 3 of the civil calendar.
