Fathers of the Third Ecumenical Council

Commemoration of the Holy Fathers of the Third Ecumenical Council at Ephesus.

The Third Ecumenical Council met at Ephesus in 431 under the presidency of St. Cyril of Alexandria. It condemned the teaching of Nestorius, who divided Christ into two persons and refused the Virgin the title Theotokos, and confirmed that Mary is truly the Mother of God, since the one born of her is the eternal Son and Word.

The Holy Fathers of the Council are commemorated on September 9, in the afterfeast of the Nativity of the Theotokos.

On the New Calendar, Fathers of the Third Ecumenical Council is commemorated on September 9. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 22 of the civil calendar.
