Joseph of Volokolamsk

Venerable Joseph, abbot and wonderworker of Volokolamsk.

St. Joseph was born near Volokolamsk in 1440 and became a monk in youth under St. Paphnutius of Borovsk. He founded the monastery of the Dormition at Volokolamsk, giving it a strict cenobitic rule and making it a center of charity in times of famine, and he defended Orthodoxy against the heresy of the Judaizers.

He reposed in 1515 and is commemorated on September 9.

On the New Calendar, Joseph of Volokolamsk is commemorated on September 9. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 22 of the civil calendar.
