James of Nisibis

St. James, Bishop of Nisibis, father of the Council of Nicaea.

St. James of Nisibis was a hermit who was made bishop of that city in the fourth century. He attended the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea and, tradition relates, delivered Nisibis from a Persian siege by his prayers. St. Ephrem the Syrian was his disciple.

He reposed in peace and is commemorated on January 13.

On the New Calendar, James of Nisibis is commemorated on January 13. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on January 26 of the civil calendar.
