Maximos Kavsokalyvites

Venerable Maximos the Hut-Burner of Mount Athos.

St. Maximos was born in Lampsacus in the thirteenth century and became a monk on Mount Athos. He lived as a hermit, repeatedly burning his hut and moving on to avoid attachment, for which he was called Kavsokalyvites, the hut-burner; some took him for a fool until St. Gregory of Sinai recognized his holiness.

He was granted the gift of unceasing prayer and reposed in peace around 1365. He is commemorated on January 13.

On the New Calendar, Maximos Kavsokalyvites is commemorated on January 13. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on January 26 of the civil calendar.
