John Kochurov

Holy Hieromartyr John Kochurov, missionary priest in America and first clergy martyr of the Bolshevik revolution.

John Kochurov served as a missionary priest in Chicago from 1895 to 1907 under Saint Tikhon, building the cathedral of the Holy Trinity there. He returned to Russia and served at Tsarskoye Selo.

On October 31, 1917, days after the Bolshevik seizure of power, he was dragged from a procession and shot, the first priest to be martyred by the new regime; he was glorified in 1994.

On the New Calendar, John Kochurov is commemorated on October 31. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 13 of the civil calendar.
