Nicholas the New Martyr of Chios

Holy New Martyr Nicholas of Chios, beheaded in 1754.

Nicholas was born on Chios and in a moment of mental distress uttered the Muslim confession of faith. Recovering, he was tormented by remorse and, after preparing himself by prayer and confession, presented himself before the Turkish judge and proclaimed himself a Christian.

He was beheaded on Chios in 1754, and the Church honors him among the New Martyrs.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Nicholas the New Martyr of Chios is commemorated on October 31. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 13 of the civil calendar.
