St. John the Faster, Patriarch of Constantinople, renowned for his ascetic fasting.
St. John IV, called the Faster, was a goldsmith of Constantinople who embraced the monastic life and rose, against his own wishes, to the patriarchal throne in 582. He was famed for his extreme fasting, his almsgiving, and his gift of healing, and he composed canons of penance that were long used in the Church.
He reposed in 595, leaving nothing behind but a wooden bed, a coarse blanket and a threadbare cloak. He is commemorated on September 2.
