Jonah the Prophet

Holy Prophet Jonah, who preached repentance to Nineveh.

The holy Prophet Jonah, son of Amittai, was sent by God to preach repentance to Nineveh. Fleeing his commission by sea, he was cast overboard and swallowed by a great fish, and after three days was delivered to complete his mission, at which the whole city repented in sackcloth.

The Lord Himself named the sign of Jonah as a figure of His own three days in the tomb. The prophet is commemorated on September 21.

On the New Calendar, Jonah the Prophet is commemorated on September 21. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 4 of the civil calendar.
