Lawrence of Kaluga

Blessed Lawrence, Fool-for-Christ of Kaluga.

Blessed Lawrence lived in Kaluga in Russia in the early sixteenth century as a fool-for-Christ, going barefoot in winter and summer. Tradition relates that his prayers helped the city withstand a Tatar attack.

He reposed in 1515 and a monastery was later founded at the place of his ascetic struggles.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Lawrence of Kaluga is commemorated on August 10. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 23 of the civil calendar.
