  Lawrence the Archdeacon

  Martyr, Λαυρέντιος

  St. Lawrence was archdeacon of the Church of Rome in the third century, entrusted with her treasury and her care for the poor. In the persecution of Valerian, when the prefect demanded the treasures of the Church, Lawrence gathered the poor and the sick and presented them, saying that these were her treasures.

• Sixtus of Rome and Hippolytus

  Hierarch, Ξύστος Ρώμης και Ιππόλυτος

  Saint Sixtus was bishop of Rome during the persecution of Valerian and was beheaded in 258, a few days before his archdeacon Lawrence. Hippolytus, a soldier who guarded Lawrence, was moved by his faith to become a Christian and was himself martyred.

  The synaxaria record that Saint Heron was a philosopher who embraced Christ and confessed Him before the pagans, for which he was put to death.

  The Six Martyrs of Bizye confessed Christ in the Thracian city of Bizye during the pagan persecutions and were put to death together.

• Agathonike of Carthage

  Holy Woman, Αγαθονίκη η εν Καρχηδόνι

  Saint Agathonike was a Christian virgin of Carthage in North Africa who refused to sacrifice to idols and was put to death for her faith.

• Lawrence of Kaluga

  Venerable, Λαυρέντιος της Καλούγας

  Blessed Lawrence lived in Kaluga in Russia in the early sixteenth century as a fool-for-Christ, going barefoot in winter and summer. Tradition relates that his prayers helped the city withstand a Tatar attack.
