Sixtus of Rome and Hippolytus

Hieromartyr Sixtus, Pope of Rome, with the Martyr Hippolytus, companions of the Archdeacon Lawrence.

Saint Sixtus was bishop of Rome during the persecution of Valerian and was beheaded in 258, a few days before his archdeacon Lawrence. Hippolytus, a soldier who guarded Lawrence, was moved by his faith to become a Christian and was himself martyred.

They are commemorated together with Saint Lawrence on this day.

On the New Calendar, Sixtus of Rome and Hippolytus is commemorated on August 10. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 23 of the civil calendar.
