  Matthias the Apostle

  Apostle, Ματθίας

  St. Matthias was a disciple of the Lord from the beginning, one of those who accompanied Him from the baptism of John until the Ascension. After the fall of Judas, the Apostles prayed and cast lots, and Matthias was chosen to take his place among the Twelve, as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles.

• Ten Martyrs of Chalke

  Saint, Δέκα Μάρτυρες της Χαλκής

  During the persecution of the iconoclast emperor Leo the Isaurian, a group of Christians resisted the removal of the icon of Christ from the Chalke Gate of the imperial palace. Ten of them, including women, were imprisoned and put to death.

  The synaxaria record that Saint Antoninos confessed Christ in Alexandria and was burned alive for his faith.

• Herman of Alaska

  Venerable, Γερμανός Αλάσκας

  Saint Herman was a monk of Valaam who went with the first Orthodox mission to Alaska in 1794. He settled on Spruce Island, where he cared for orphans, defended the native Aleuts against the abuses of traders and lived in prayer and simplicity.

• Euthymios of Rhodes

  Hierarch, Ευθύμιος Ρόδου

  Saint Euthymios was Metropolitan of Rhodes in the seventeenth century. Tradition relates that he was imprisoned and tormented by the Ottoman authorities for his defence of his flock and died in confinement.

• Psoes of Egypt

  Venerable, Ψόης

  Saint Psoes was one of the desert fathers of Egypt, who lived in asceticism and reposed in peace.
