Venerable Herman of Alaska, wonderworker and enlightener of the Aleuts.
August 9
Saint Herman was a monk of Valaam who went with the first Orthodox mission to Alaska in 1794. He settled on Spruce Island, where he cared for orphans, defended the native Aleuts against the abuses of traders and lived in prayer and simplicity.
He reposed in 1837 and was glorified in 1970 as the first saint of Orthodox America.

Venerable Herman was a monk of Valaam who came to Alaska with the first Orthodox mission in 1794. He lived for decades on Spruce Island, caring for the native Aleuts, defending them against injustice, and teaching the children; he reposed there in 1837.
The Greek Synaxarion remembers on this day the hieromonk Juvenal and Peter the Aleut and all the saints who have shone forth in Alaska.
