Ten Martyrs of Chalke

Holy Ten Martyrs who suffered for the holy icons at the Chalke Gate of Constantinople.

During the persecution of the iconoclast emperor Leo the Isaurian, a group of Christians resisted the removal of the icon of Christ from the Chalke Gate of the imperial palace. Ten of them, including women, were imprisoned and put to death.

They are honoured as martyrs and confessors of the holy icons.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Ten Martyrs of Chalke is commemorated on August 9. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 22 of the civil calendar.
