Lazarus the Iconographer

Venerable Lazarus the Iconographer of Constantinople, confessor under the iconoclasts.

Saint Lazarus was a monk and icon painter in Constantinople in the ninth century. During the iconoclast persecution of the Emperor Theophilos he continued to paint icons and was imprisoned and tortured; tradition relates that his hands were burned with hot irons.

After the restoration of the icons he painted the image of Christ over the Chalke gate of the palace and reposed in peace.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Lazarus the Iconographer is commemorated on November 17. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 30 of the civil calendar.
