Venerable Luke of Hellas, ascetic of Mount Steirion, founder of the Monastery of Hosios Loukas.
St. Luke was born in the tenth century to a family of farmers in central Greece and from childhood gave away his food and clothing to the poor. He became a monk and struggled in several places before settling on Mount Steirion near Delphi, where disciples gathered around him.
He was granted the gifts of prophecy and healing, and after his repose the great monastery of Hosios Loukas rose over his tomb, where his relics are venerated to this day.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, Luke of Steirion is commemorated on February 7. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 20 of the civil calendar.
