Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke.
St. Luke the Evangelist was a physician of Antioch and a companion of the Apostle Paul in his missionary labors. He wrote the third Gospel, which preserves the fullest account of the Nativity and the parables of divine mercy, and the Acts of the Apostles, the history of the Church's first years.
Tradition honors him also as the first iconographer, who painted the image of the Most Holy Theotokos, and relates that he served the Gospel into old age in Greece. The beloved physician and evangelist is commemorated on October 18.
