Symeon and Theodore of Mega Spilaion

Venerable Symeon and Theodore, founders of the Monastery of Mega Spilaion, and the shepherdess Euphrosyne.

The brothers Symeon and Theodore, monks from Thessalonica, were guided by a vision to a great cave in the mountains of Achaia. There, tradition relates, the shepherdess Euphrosyne led them to an icon of the Theotokos painted by the Evangelist Luke, hidden in the cave.

They founded on that spot the monastery of Mega Spilaion, one of the oldest in Greece, and reposed in peace.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Symeon and Theodore of Mega Spilaion is commemorated on October 18. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 31 of the civil calendar.
