Makarios of Kios

Holy New Monk-Martyr Makarios of Kios in Bithynia, beheaded at Prousa in 1590.

Makarios was born at Kios in Bithynia; his father had converted to Islam and pressed him to do the same. He fled to Mount Athos and became a monk at the Skete of Saint Anne.

Seized with the desire for martyrdom, he returned home and openly confessed Christ before the Turkish judge. After imprisonment and torture he was beheaded at Prousa in 1590.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Makarios of Kios is commemorated on October 6. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 19 of the civil calendar.
