  Thomas the Apostle

  Apostle, Θωμάς

  St. Thomas, called the Twin, was one of the Twelve Apostles. Absent when the risen Christ first appeared to the disciples, he said he would not believe unless he touched the wounds of the Lord; eight days later Christ invited him to do so, and Thomas confessed Him as Lord and God — the clearest confession of the divinity of Christ in the Gospels.

• Erotheis the Martyr

  Holy Woman, Ερωτηΐς

  Erotheis was a Christian maiden who confessed Christ before the pagan authorities and refused to sacrifice to idols. Tradition relates that she was cast into a fire and gave up her soul to God unharmed in faith.

• Makarios of Kios

  Martyr, Μακάριος ο Οσιομάρτυς

  Makarios was born at Kios in Bithynia; his father had converted to Islam and pressed him to do the same. He fled to Mount Athos and became a monk at the Skete of Saint Anne.

• Kendeas the Wonderworker

  Venerable, Κενδέας

  Kendeas came from Germany, or according to another account from Palestine, and lived as a hermit in the Jordan desert before sailing to Cyprus. He settled in a cave near the village of Avgorou, where he lived in fasting and prayer.

• Innocent of Alaska

  Hierarch, Ιννοκέντιος Βενιαμίνωφ

  Born in 1797 in Siberia, the priest John Veniaminov volunteered for the mission to the Aleutian Islands, where he learned the native tongue, created an alphabet, and translated the Scriptures and services. As Bishop Innocent he founded churches and schools across Alaska and eastern Siberia.

• Gregory of Khandzta

  Venerable, Γρηγόριος του Χαντζτέλι

  Gregory was born in the eighth century to a noble Georgian family and was raised at the royal court, but chose the monastic life. He founded the monastery of Khandzta in the wilderness of Klarjeti and many other communities.
