  Sergios and Vakchos

  Martyr, Σέργιος και Βάκχος

  Saints Sergius and Bacchus were high-ranking officers in the Roman army at the end of the third century, secretly Christians and beloved of the emperor. When their faith was discovered they refused to sacrifice to the idols; stripped of their rank, they were paraded in mockery and cruelly tortured. Bacchus died under the blows, and Sergius was afterward beheaded in Syria.

• Polychronios the Hieromartyr

  Hierarch, Πολυχρόνιος

  Polychronios was the son of a farmer in Gamphanitos who worked as a vine-dresser in Constantinople and lived in fasting and prayer. Tradition relates that his master, seeing his holiness, gave him gold with which he built a church; he was ordained priest and was present at the First Ecumenical Council.

• John the Hermit and the 98 Fathers of Crete

  Venerable, Ιωάννης ο Ερημίτης

  John came from Egypt with thirty-six companions and settled in Crete, where they were joined by others until they numbered ninety-nine. They lived in caves near Akrotiri, and John, their leader, was known for his continual prayer and gift of wonderworking.

• Julian and Caesarius of Terracina

  Martyr, Ιουλιανός και Καισάριος

  Caesarius, a deacon from Africa, came to Terracina and openly rebuked the pagan custom of casting a youth from a cliff in honor of Apollo. With the priest Julian he was imprisoned and tortured.

• Leontios the Hypatikos

  Martyr, Λεόντιος ο Υπατικός

  Leontios held consular rank and was a Christian. Tradition relates that he confessed Christ openly and distributed his goods to the poor before his death.
