  Sergios was a nobleman of Constantinople, related to Patriarch Photios, who lived during the second period of Iconoclasm in the ninth century. For his defense of the icons he was stripped of his property and exiled with his family.

  September 25, Venerable, Σέργιος του Ραντονέζ

  St. Sergius was born near Rostov in the early fourteenth century and, as a young man, withdrew with his brother into the forest of Radonezh, where he built a church of the Holy Trinity. The brotherhood that gathered around him became the Trinity Lavra, the spiritual heart of Russia, and his disciples founded monasteries across the land.

  Sergios and Vakchos

  October 7, Martyr, Σέργιος και Βάκχος

  Saints Sergius and Bacchus were high-ranking officers in the Roman army at the end of the third century, secretly Christians and beloved of the emperor. When their faith was discovered they refused to sacrifice to the idols; stripped of their rank, they were paraded in mockery and cruelly tortured. Bacchus died under the blows, and Sergius was afterward beheaded in Syria.
