  Euphrosyne of Alexandria (2nd)

  Holy Woman, Ευφροσύνη

  St. Euphrosyne of Alexandria lived in the fifth century. The daughter of a wealthy and pious father, she fled a marriage arranged for her and, disguising herself in men's clothing, entered a monastery of men under the name Smaragdos, where she lived for many years in fasting, prayer, and perfect obscurity.

• Paphnutius the Egyptian

  Venerable, Παφνούτιος

  St. Paphnutius was a wealthy Christian of Alexandria in the fifth century whose only daughter Euphrosyne fled a worldly marriage to live in disguise as a monk. Tradition relates that he sought her for years, was consoled by the monk Smaragdus without knowing it was she, and learned the truth only at her deathbed.

• Sergius of Radonezh

  St. Sergius was born near Rostov in the early fourteenth century and, as a young man, withdrew with his brother into the forest of Radonezh, where he built a church of the Holy Trinity. The brotherhood that gathered around him became the Trinity Lavra, the spiritual heart of Russia, and his disciples founded monasteries across the land.

  Hierarch, Παφνούτιος ο Ιεροσολυμίτης

  St. Paphnutius was an ascetic and priest of Egypt who, in the persecution of Diocletian, went of his own accord before the governor and confessed Christ. Tradition relates that his constancy under torture brought many to the faith, and that five hundred and forty-six were put to death with him before he himself was crucified.

  St. Theophilos was Archbishop of Ephesus in the eighth century who defended the veneration of the holy icons against the iconoclasts and suffered exile for his confession.
