  Repose of the Evangelist John the Theologian

  Apostle, Κοίμηση Ιωάννου

  On September 26 the Church commemorates the repose of St. John the Theologian, the beloved disciple of Christ, who leaned upon the breast of the Lord at the Mystical Supper and stood by His Cross, receiving the Theotokos into his care. He wrote the fourth Gospel, three epistles, and the Revelation, and shepherded the churches of Asia from Ephesus.

• Neilos of Calabria

  Venerable, Νείλος ο Καλαβρός

  St. Neilos was born at Rossano in Calabria in the tenth century, when southern Italy was still Greek and Orthodox, and after a worldly youth embraced the monastic life, becoming a renowned ascetic, calligrapher and spiritual father. Driven north by Saracen raids, he founded the Greek monastery of Grottaferrata near Rome shortly before his death.

• Gideon the Righteous

  Saint, Γεδεών

  The righteous Gideon was a judge of Israel called by an angel of the Lord at the winepress to deliver his people from the Midianites. Assured by the sign of the fleece, he chose three hundred men by God's command and put the enemy host to flight with trumpets and torches.

• The Five Canonical Virgins

  Holy Woman, Θέκλα, Μαριάμνη, Μάρθα, Μαρία και Ενναθά

  The holy virgins Thekla, Mariamne, Martha, Mary and Ennatha were consecrated virgins of Persia, called canonical because they were enrolled in the Church's order of virgins. Tradition relates that they were denounced by an apostate priest and beheaded for Christ in the fourth century.

• John the Cave-dweller of Cyprus

  Venerable, Ιωάννης ο Σπηλαιώτης

  St. John the Cave-dweller lived as a hermit in a cave near the village of Sia in Cyprus, in prayer and asceticism, and reposed in peace. A church at the site keeps his memory.

• Ephraim of Perekom

  Venerable, Εφραίμ του Περεκόμ

  St. Ephraim was born at Kashin in 1412 and became a disciple of St. Sabbas of Vishera near Novgorod. He founded a monastery on the shore of Lake Ilmen at Perekom, where he cut a channel to drain the marshes, and guided the brethren until his repose in 1492.
