Gideon the Righteous

Righteous Gideon, judge of Israel, who overcame Midian with three hundred men.

The righteous Gideon was a judge of Israel called by an angel of the Lord at the winepress to deliver his people from the Midianites. Assured by the sign of the fleece, he chose three hundred men by God's command and put the enemy host to flight with trumpets and torches.

The fleece wet with dew is read by the Church as a figure of the Theotokos. Gideon is commemorated on September 26, a name day for Gedeon.
