Venerable Neilos the Younger of Rossano, founder of Grottaferrata.
St. Neilos was born at Rossano in Calabria in the tenth century, when southern Italy was still Greek and Orthodox, and after a worldly youth embraced the monastic life, becoming a renowned ascetic, calligrapher and spiritual father. Driven north by Saracen raids, he founded the Greek monastery of Grottaferrata near Rome shortly before his death.
He reposed in 1004 and is commemorated on September 26.
