Makedonios the Hermit

Venerable Makedonios the Hermit of Syria.

St. Makedonios lived for many decades on the mountains of Syria in the fourth and fifth centuries, eating only barley and later a little bread, and was called the Barley-Eater. Tradition relates that he healed the sick and interceded for the people of Antioch after their revolt against the emperor.

He reposed in peace at a great age and is commemorated on January 24.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Makedonios the Hermit is commemorated on January 24. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 6 of the civil calendar.
