Venerable Marcian, hermit of the desert near Cyrrhus in Syria.
Venerable Marcian lived in the fourth century as a hermit in the desert of Chalcis near Cyrrhus in Syria. Of noble birth, he left the imperial court to live in a small cell, devoting himself to prayer, fasting and the study of Scripture.
Tradition relates that disciples gathered around him and that he was known for his discernment and humility, refusing to be ordained and asking that his burial place remain unknown.

On the New Calendar, Marcian of Cyrrhus is commemorated on November 2. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 15 of the civil calendar.
