Markianos and Martyrios the Notaries

Holy Martyrs Markianos and Martyrios, notaries of Constantinople, slain by the Arians.

Markianos, a reader, and Martyrios, a subdeacon, served as secretaries to Saint Paul the Confessor, Patriarch of Constantinople, and defended the Orthodox faith against the Arians.

When bribes and threats failed to win them over, they were beheaded around 355; Saint John Chrysostom later built a church over their tomb.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Markianos and Martyrios the Notaries is commemorated on October 25. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 7 of the civil calendar.
