St. Marouthas, Bishop of Martyropolis, and the Persian Martyrs whose relics he gathered.
St. Marouthas was a learned bishop of Mesopotamia who served as envoy between the Byzantine and Persian courts and won the favour of the Persian king, securing relief for the persecuted Christians. He gathered the relics of the Persian martyrs into his city, which was thereafter called Martyropolis.
He wrote an account of their sufferings and reposed in peace in the early fifth century.

On the New Calendar, Marouthas of Martyropolis is commemorated on February 16. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 1 of the civil calendar.
