  Pamphilos

  Martyr, Πάμφιλος

  St. Pamphilos was a priest of Caesarea in Palestine, a man of great learning who devoted his life to the study and careful copying of the Holy Scriptures and gathered a famous library for the Church. During the persecutions at the beginning of the fourth century he was imprisoned for his confession of Christ, and after a long captivity he was put to death together with a company of fellow martyrs.

• Flavian of Constantinople

  Hierarch, Φλαβιανός Κωνσταντινουπόλεως

  St. Flavian was Patriarch of Constantinople in the fifth century. He condemned the heresy of Eutyches at a local council, but at the Robber Council of Ephesus in 449 he was deposed and so brutally beaten by the heretics that he died shortly afterwards.

• Marouthas of Martyropolis

  Hierarch, Μαρουθάς

  St. Marouthas was a learned bishop of Mesopotamia who served as envoy between the Byzantine and Persian courts and won the favour of the Persian king, securing relief for the persecuted Christians. He gathered the relics of the Persian martyrs into his city, which was thereafter called Martyropolis.

• Romanos the New Martyr

  Martyr, Ρωμανός ο Νέος

  St. Romanos came from Karpenisi in central Greece. Tradition relates that he was a simple, illiterate man who longed for martyrdom, became a monk on Mount Athos and was prepared for his contest by the fathers there.
