New Monk-martyr Romanos of Karpenisi, who suffered in Constantinople.
St. Romanos came from Karpenisi in central Greece. Tradition relates that he was a simple, illiterate man who longed for martyrdom, became a monk on Mount Athos and was prepared for his contest by the fathers there.
He went to Constantinople, confessed Christ before the Turkish authorities, and was beheaded in the late seventeenth century.

On the New Calendar, Romanos the New Martyr is commemorated on February 16. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 1 of the civil calendar.
