Venerable Matrona of Chios, the wonderworker and abbess of the island.
Matrona was born Mary in the village of Volissos on Chios to wealthy parents. Refusing marriage, she fled to a small convent near the town of Chios, where she was tonsured and later became abbess, enlarging the community by her own labors.
She was known for her severe asceticism and gift of healing, and reposed in the late fifteenth century; she is one of the most beloved saints of Chios.

On the New Calendar, Matrona of Chios is commemorated on October 20. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 2 of the civil calendar.
