Holy Great Martyr Menas of Egypt, the soldier martyred at Kotyaion, patron of Heraklion.
Saint Menas was an Egyptian soldier in the Roman army in the late third century. When Diocletian's persecution began he left the army and lived in the mountains in prayer, then returned to Kotyaion in Phrygia and openly confessed Christ during the games.
After cruel tortures he was beheaded. His relics were brought to Egypt, where his shrine at Abu Mena became one of the great pilgrimage centres of the ancient world; he is patron of Heraklion in Crete.
