Theodore the Studite

Venerable Theodore the Confessor, Abbot of the Studion monastery and defender of the holy icons.

Saint Theodore was born in Constantinople in 759 and became abbot of the monastery of the Studion, which he made a model of monastic order. He suffered repeated exile and imprisonment, first for opposing the uncanonical marriage of the emperor and later for defending the veneration of the holy icons.

He wrote extensively on the monastic life and the icons, composed many hymns, and reposed in exile in 826.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Theodore the Studite is commemorated on November 11. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 24 of the civil calendar.
