Michael the Synkellos

Venerable Michael the Synkellos, Confessor, of Jerusalem and Constantinople.

Venerable Michael was born in Jerusalem in the eighth century and became a monk and later synkellos of the Patriarch of Jerusalem. Sent to Constantinople, he confessed the veneration of the holy icons before the iconoclast emperors and endured prison and exile.

After the restoration of the icons he was made abbot of the monastery of Chora, where he reposed in peace in 846.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Michael the Synkellos is commemorated on December 18. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 31 of the civil calendar.
