Potamon of Heraclea

Hieromartyr Potamon, Bishop of Heraclea in Egypt, confessor and father of Nicaea.

Potamon was bishop of Heraclea in Egypt and suffered in the persecution of Maximian, losing an eye for his confession. He took part in the Council of Nicaea and later defended Saint Athanasios against the Arians.

Tradition relates that he was beaten to death by Arian agents around the year 341.

On the New Calendar, Potamon of Heraclea is commemorated on May 18. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 31 of the civil calendar.
