Prochoros of the Kiev Caves

Venerable Prochoros the Wonderworker of the Kiev Caves, called the Orach-eater.

St. Prochoros came from Smolensk and became a monk at the Kiev Caves, where he ate only bread made from the wild orach plant. During a famine he baked this bread for the hungry, and it tasted sweet to those who took it with a blessing.

He also miraculously turned ashes into salt for the people during a shortage. He reposed in the early twelfth century.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Prochoros of the Kiev Caves is commemorated on February 10. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 23 of the civil calendar.
