Zeno the Faster

Venerable Zeno the Courier, hermit near Antioch, former servant of the Emperor Valens.

St. Zeno was born to a noble family of Caesarea in Cappadocia and served as an imperial courier under the Emperor Valens. After the emperor's death he left the world and lived as a hermit in a tomb near Antioch, in extreme poverty and silence.

Theodoret of Cyrrhus, who visited him, records his life; he reposed in peace in the early fifth century.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Zeno the Faster is commemorated on February 10. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 23 of the civil calendar.
