Procopios of Ustyug

Blessed Procopios, Fool for Christ and wonderworker of Ustyug.

St. Procopios was a merchant from the West who embraced Orthodoxy in Novgorod and took up the ascetic life of a fool for Christ in Ustyug. He lived in poverty and prayer and was despised by many during his life.

Tradition relates that his prayers saved the city from a storm of fiery stones. He reposed in 1303 and is honored as a wonderworker.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Procopios of Ustyug is commemorated on July 8. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 21 of the civil calendar.
