Theophilos the Myrrh-gusher

Venerable Theophilos the Myrrh-gusher of Mount Athos.

St. Theophilos was born in Macedonia in the fifteenth century and, after serving the Church in Thessaloniki and Constantinople, withdrew to Mount Athos. He lived in asceticism at Vatopedi and the skete of St. Basil, and reposed in 1548.

After his repose his relics flowed with myrrh, for which he is called the Myrrh-gusher.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Theophilos the Myrrh-gusher is commemorated on July 8. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 21 of the civil calendar.
